Argentavis magnificens

Description

My rendition of an Argentavis magnificens. With an estimated wingspan of up to 26 feet, it is the largest flying bird ever discovered. It was soaring around late Miocene Argentina some 6 million years ago. Sometimes referred to as a Giant teratorn, I decided to draw much of my inspiration from modern day condors and vultures...but not too much, because it is disputed whether or not Argentavis fed exclusively on carrion or actively hunted small prey. The latter hypothesis stems from the anatomy of its bill, which is longer, more eagle-like, and had a wide gape in comparison to condors and the like. I gave it the characteristic raptoresc browridges to pay homage to that particular idea (I would have liked to have seen the actual skull, but I couldn't find a picture or anything that described it in specific detail :( call it artistic license LOL)

Anyhoos, this is my first attempt at watercolors. I must say, I'm quite pleased with the results.

PS. His name is Argy. So original, I know :P
